Free event for employers looking to tap social nets

Isle of Man employers and recruiters are invited to attend a free information session about Manx Graduates, the free-to-use careers and networking portal for Manx professionals.
Hosted by the Isle of Man Department of Trade and Industry, the session will include a presentation from Chris Gledhill, managing director of PDMS, the software firm that developed the site. He will provide an overview of the site and a detailed insight into how organisations can use the portal to benefit business and the Island's job market.
Minister David Cretney MHK will be in attendance along with Sue Cook, Chief Executive of Junior Achievement IOM.

There is a significant shortfall in understanding of social media and in the hard skills required for marketing success on the social Internet, according to a study released by recruitment firm Major Players.
The research shows that while social networking has grown rapidly over the last two years, marketing and public relations professionals fail to show an appreciation of new trends or much understanding of how social media has changed the way marketers communicate with consumers.
"For companies struggling to get to grips with social media, there is a clear gap in available skills and knowledge as underlined in the Major Players study," said PDMS Managing Director Chris Gledhill. "We've created our Digital Design service to meet this specific need. In 2007 the Isle of Man JobCentre approached PDMS because they wanted to improve the walk-in JobCentre facility in Douglas.
At the time, the JobCentre still used the card index system, with each job being manually printed onto a small card, which was then placed in the categorised appropriate rack. This was time consuming for both employees and jobseekers as they had to carry slips of paper around and make a note of reference numbers, and take them to the enquiries counter in order to get full details of the vacancy.
Consequently the JobCentre began a project to rebrand the JobCentre, and refit the interior with touchscreen kiosks at which Jobseekers would be able to browse and print jobs themselves, saving time for both themselves and the staff.
PDMS developed a version of the JobCentre website, specifically designed to run on secure kiosk PC's which were installed in the JobCentre. Digital Design designed the interface and worked closely with the PDMS development teams to ensure
